Should You Redesign Your Contractor Website or Just Fix SEO?

4 min read

Here’s a scenario I see all the time. A contractor (roofer, plumber, HVAC tech, doesn’t matter) decides they need more leads. They call a marketing company. The marketing company says “You need SEO.” They sign up. $1,500 a month. Six months go by. Rankings go up. Traffic goes up. But the phone doesn’t ring any more than it did before.

What happened? The SEO worked. The problem was never the traffic. The problem was the website.

Pouring Traffic Into a Broken Storefront

Think about it like this. You own a shop on a busy street. The front window is cracked, the sign is faded, and the door sticks. An advertising company comes along and puts up a billboard that sends twice as many people past your store. More foot traffic. But nobody walks in, because the place looks like it’s closing down.

That’s what SEO does for a bad website. It gets more people to see something that already wasn’t working.

I’ve talked to contractors who spent $10,000 or more on SEO over the course of a year and couldn’t figure out why their call volume barely moved. Then they pull up their own site on a phone and it takes 8 seconds to load. The phone number is buried. There are no reviews. The homepage still says “Welcome to our website.”

No amount of Google ranking fixes that.

When SEO Is the Right Call

SEO makes sense when your website already does its job. Meaning:

  • It loads fast. Under 3 seconds on a phone
  • It looks professional and current
  • Your phone number is visible immediately, especially on mobile
  • Your services are clearly listed with dedicated pages
  • You have real reviews or testimonials visible
  • There are clear calls to action. “Call Now,” “Get a Free Estimate”

If all of that is in place and you’re still not getting calls, then yeah, your problem is probably visibility. People just aren’t finding you. SEO, Google Business Profile optimization, maybe some local service ads. That’s the play.

But be honest with yourself before you go down that road.

When a Redesign Is the Right Call

If your site is slow, looks like it was built in 2014, doesn’t work right on phones, or makes visitors hunt for basic information, you have a conversion problem. The site itself is losing you jobs.

Signs you need a redesign, not SEO:

  • Your site takes more than 4 seconds to load on mobile
  • It doesn’t look good on a phone (pinch-to-zoom, text too small, buttons too close together)
  • There’s no clear call to action above the fold
  • You don’t have reviews or trust signals on the homepage
  • The design looks noticeably older than your competitors’ sites
  • You’re embarrassed to send people to it

That last one is the real tell. If you wouldn’t hand your website URL to a potential customer with confidence, something is wrong with the site.

The Uncomfortable Middle: Sometimes You Need Both

I won’t pretend it’s always one or the other. Some contractors need a better site and better visibility. But order matters.

Fix the site first. Then drive traffic to it.

If you do it the other way around, spend months on SEO while the site stays broken, you’re paying to send people to something that pushes them away. Every visitor who bounces because the site is slow or confusing is a wasted opportunity you paid for.

Get the foundation right. Make sure when someone lands on your site, they see a business they’d actually want to call. Then turn up the volume.

How to Tell Which You Need Right Now

Pull out your phone. Open your website. Answer these honestly:

  1. Does the site load in under 3 seconds?
  2. Is your phone number visible without scrolling?
  3. Would you call this company if you didn’t know it was yours?
  4. Are there real customer reviews on the site?
  5. Does it clearly list your services and service area?
  6. Does it look as good as (or better than) your top competitor’s site?

If you answered “no” to two or more of those, you have a website problem. SEO won’t fix it. A new site will.

If you answered “yes” to most of them, your site is probably doing its job. You just need more people to see it. That’s where SEO comes in.

Figure Out Where You Stand

We do free website audits at BurksUP that score exactly these things. Speed, mobile experience, trust signals, calls to action, the works. Takes about 5 minutes to go through the report. You’ll know whether your issue is the site or the traffic, and you won’t have to guess.

If it turns out you need a full redesign, we can talk about that. If the site is solid and you just need SEO help, we’ll tell you that too. Either way, you’ll stop spending money in the wrong place.
